Simple Table Setting

Here are some things to remember when setting a table for a dinner party.

Always remember the dinner plate is placed in the centre of the place setting and everything else is placed around it. Then, the flatware is arranged around the plate in the order in which it will be used:

The small butter plate and knife is placed above the forks at the left of the place setting
To the left of the plate is the fork.
To the right of the plate is the knife and spoon. The knife is placed to the right of the plate with the sharp edge toward the plate.

To the right of the knife is the spoon.
The water glasses and are positioned to the right directly above the knife. Just to the right of the water glass you place the red and white wine glass.

 The napkin is placed on top of the charger plate (if one is used) or in the space for the plated. Folded as you wish, or it can also go to the left of the forks, or under the forks if space is tight.


The soup and/or dessert spoons are to the right of the knife or can be brought to the table when soup or dessert is served.

As far as table decorations, you should not overcrowed the table especially if you are doing more of a family style service like Thanksgiving.  Maybe just a small flower arrangement in the center with some candles.  Or a few baby pumpkins for Thanksgiving or some pine cones and small round Christmas ornaments to add some color. 

The best suggestion of all is set the table ahead of time so you can focus on cooking and entertaining your guest.
